St. Paul's and Shopping Malls

May 22, 2007
Malacca - Day 17

This morning, a group of us climbed up a hill to St. Paul's church, one of the last remnants of Dutch presence in the city. Although the facade is broken and worn out, I found the building to be quite beautiful. Huge tombstones lined its inner walls and the gaps where windows, doors and walls used to be
, opened to a magnificent view over the city. Malacca looks so different from above - more lush and vibrant. In addition to St. Paul's, we also found a small group of vendors at the top of the hill. They set up tables inside and outside the church displaying an array of key chains and other assorted keepsakes to the sparse stream of tourists passing by. I wonder how much they make from this. And how many other jobs they may hold.

Having frequented all the tourist spots nearby, we took an air-conditioning break in a shopping mall afterwards. The building was huge and quite disproportionate to the number of people roaming within it. A good use of space?
