SIRD

May 23, 2007
Kuala Lumpur - Day 18

A short bus ride took us to the SIRD (
the Strategic Information and Research Development Center) in Kuala Lumpur today for a scheduled dinner with local student activists, journalists and NGO affiliates. These individuals are active in promoting the Chinese community in KL. During a round of speeches, I had the opportunity to listen to their outrage at the Malaysian government's continual closure of public Chinese schools in the city. I wish we had more time to converse with these individuals.

A girl sitting to my left whispered to me that students are forbidden to join in the cause. If their involvement was discovered, there was a potential of being kicked out of school.
